Psychometrics in recruitment — assessing a candidate's fit for a role

A CV and interview show only part of the picture. Psychometrics can add information about a candidate's potential and fit for a role.

A CV, professional experience and interview show only part of a candidate's profile. Psychometrics can add structured information about their potential, natural working style and professional predispositions.

The aim is not to find an “ideal personality type”. The value of assessment lies in exploring how a person's potential fits the demands of a specific role and work environment.

Why is an interview alone not always enough?

During an interview, a candidate describes their experience, working style and strengths. This is an important information source, but much of it consists of self-reported statements.

A recruiter may also be influenced unconsciously by first impressions, similarity to themselves or previous experience with comparable candidates.

Psychometrics does not replace the recruitment interview. It can add a structured source of information to compare with experience, competencies and job requirements.

What can you explore with psychometrics?

Depending on the position, an organisation may be interested in different aspects of a person's potential.

A sales role, an analytical role and team management may each require different predispositions.

A psychometric result should therefore always be interpreted in relation to a specific role, rather than as a judgement detached from context.

Fit does not mean looking for identical people

One mistake in applying psychometrics is trying to create a single “ideal employee profile”.

Organisations need diversity. Even people doing similar work may achieve good results in different ways.

A more useful question is: Does this person's natural working style support the tasks and conditions typical of this role?

Psychometrics as support, rather than an automated decision-maker

An assessment result should not determine a hiring decision on its own.

It is most valuable as one element of a process that also considers the interview, professional experience, competencies, knowledge and job requirements.

Assessment can also help the recruiter explore an interview more deeply and ask more relevant questions.

Business example: two strong candidates for a management position

A company is recruiting a sales department manager. After several stages, two candidates remain, with similar experience, appropriate qualifications and very strong interview results.

The first candidate has worked in a large, structured organisation. The second has mainly worked in smaller companies, creating processes independently and responding quickly to change.

The new role requires more than sales knowledge. The manager will build a team, organise sales and work in an environment where many things are not yet clearly defined.

Psychometric assessment can provide additional information about each candidate's natural working style. It does not produce an automatic “hire / do not hire” answer. It allows you to compare their potential with the demands of the specific role and prepare more precise questions for the next interview.

If the result highlights a particular working pattern, the recruiter can explore it through examples from the candidate's experience: how they responded to uncertainty, made decisions, organised team work or behaved under pressure.

Psychometrics becomes an additional information source, reducing reliance on the CV, self-reported statements and first impressions alone.
